چکیده

This paper proposes two methods that estimate, from the word reading (syllable sequence), the place in the word where the accent should be placed (hereafter we call it “accent type”). Both methods use a statistical classifier; one directly estimates accent type, and the other first estimates tone high and low labels and then decides the accent type from the tone label sequence obtained before. Experiments show that both offer high accuracy in the estimation of accent type of Japanese proper names without the use of linguistic knowledge.

Category and Position as Correlates in determining Patterns of Default Accentuation in Japanese: Evidence from Nonce words

BACKGROUND: Accentuation in Japanese loanword phonology has been an area of controversy. Previous linguists such as McCawley (1968) have suggested a traditional mora-based generalization: loanword accentuation in Japanese has a basic default pattern on the syllable containing the antepenultimate mora; while others claim that Japanese loanword accentuation follows the Latin stress rule (Kubozono...

Syllable-based Regional Swiss French Accent Identification using Prosodic Features

In this paper an attempt is made to automatically recognize speaker’s accent among regional Swiss French accents from four regions of Switzerland. To achieve this goal a syllable-based classification framework is implemented using prosodic features extracted from the speech signal. Since, among these regional accents, the variations in speech mainly originate from the speaking style, i.e., diff...

Word Accent and Emotion

In this paper, we address the question whether prosodically/linguistically prominent syllables carrying the word accent (stressed syllables) are better indicators for emotional marking than unstressed syllables. To this aim, we use a large spontaneous database with children interacting with Sony’s Aibo robot, annotated with word-based emotion labels, large acoustic-prosodic feature vectors, and...

A syllable-based generalization of Japanese accentuation

One of the major findings of the recent linguistic research on Japanese is that the syllable plays a pivotal role in a variety of phonological and morphological phenomena in the mora-based prosodic system of this language. This paper attempts to reinforce this argument by proposing a significant generalization of Japanese accentuation in terms of ‘syllable weight’, an idea that each syllable ha...

Emergence of Unaccented Words in Japanese

Japanese is crucially different from other ‘accent languages’ in having a number of ‘unaccented words’, or words that are pronounced with a rather flat F0 contour. This paper illuminates some phonological factors responsible for the emergence of this peculiar type of word accent in Tokyo Japanese. It demonstrates, specifically, that unaccentedness emerges in words of some specific syllable stru...
